In the 12th and 13th centuries, a multitude of new villages and cities called “Bastides” were built in France. Through history, this phenomenon concentrated in the South West of France. These cities and villages have been built on a rational and methodological urban development pattern. It always consists of a market-place, often lined with “couverts” or sheltered archways. The way of life was governed by a pareage charter which was known and accepted by the people.
